Abstract Floral Watercolor studies

I have always been inspired by the beauty found in nature and find myself keenly aware of my surroundings at all times picking up on various hidden colors or textures or moments of light and making mental notes and snapshots of them. During the stay at home order mandated to help flatten the curve of the 2020 pandemic I found myself newly enamored with walking around outside to clear my head. I have always been an avid runner but slowing down my pace like this helped me to really think, reflect, absorb, and process more so than normal. The spring weather in North Carolina was beautiful and it seemed the new blooms popping up daily were putting on more of a show than I’d ever noticed before or, perhaps, I was given the ability to quiet myself and slow down more than usual. Either way, it was a humbling experience to be stripped away from the comfort of routines and refocused on the quite beauty of my surroundings and new priorities shaped by simplicity. With this in mind, and with a focus on color composition and the combination of floral types as textural elements, I began this study of abstract floral watercolors. Some are more suggestive and some are more literal in their depiction. My hope was to create smaller and more accessible pieces with supplies I had on hand as a part of this series that would bring the same light and joy to others during such a dark and trying time for so many.

This collection is done in watercolor on cold press, acid-free, 8”x 8” sized paper.
